The KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen 2021 started purely digitally in the first two festival weeks due to corona. Briefly extended by a week, an 11-day stage festival, partly outdoors in the Herrenhausen Gardens, was able to start on May 27 with a significant drop in incidences.
The online program of the KunstFestSpiele opened on May 13 with Raed Yassin's new work The Sea Between My Soul, which was shown as a recording. The program was followed by live digital broadcasts from the Herrenhausen Gardens or from studios in the places of origin of the invited artists and ensembles.
The premiere of Heiner Goebbels' Liberté d'Action in the Great Garden finally opened the live stage program in front of an enthusiastic audience. Around half of the events between 27.05. and 06.06. could finally be played on site despite pandemic times with audiences, albeit with significantly reduced seating capacity. Other highlights of the KunstFestSpiele 2021 were concerts with, among others, Patricia Kopatchinskaja or Derya Yıldırım, the light installation lost artefacts, lost presence by Mischa Kuball and theater evenings with the Grande Dame of European theater Viviane De Muynck. For the first time in the history of the KunstFestSpiele, the Graft of the Great Garden was navigated by boat, designed as an audio tour by the artist group YRD.Works. The festival center with its open tent in the fresh air offered artists, spectators and the KunstFestSpiele team optimal conditions to meet each other despite the pandemic situation and to enjoy the culinary delights of the freitagsküche. The festival campus Niedersachsen as an educational mission could also be carried out again with safety distances and masks and enable students from the subjects music, art and theater conversations and discussions with artists and scientists.
The realization of the 2021 program was made possible solely by the flexibility of the artists, the concession of Ronald Clark, the director of the Herrenhausen Gardens, and the organizational performance of the entire team around Intendant Ingo Metzmacher. Extensive rapid test offers for the audience, daily tests for the entire team and the artists and a detailed hygiene concept contributed to the safety of the festival. There was no corona case during the entire runtime.
